A JILAF delegation visited Vientiane and Oudomxay, Laos, from Friday, May 26, to Thursday, June 1, on the occasion of the start of the fiscal 2017 initiatives of Supporting Grass-Roots Activities through the International Employers and Workers Network (SGRA) project, held through grants from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare of the government of Japan. The delegation examined and discussed annual plans and specific activities based on the fiscal 2017 project policy.
The SGRA project in Laos is entering its third year. Continuing from last fiscal year, the SGRA project will be implemented by the policymaking Central Promotion Committee, consisting of representatives from the government office, the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare of Laos; the labour organization, Lao Federation of Trade Unions (LFTU); and the employers’ organization, the Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LNCCI), as well as from the International Labour Organization (ILO) and four Regional Working Committees in Vientiane, Savannakhet, Champasak, and Oudomxay, which are new participant from fiscal 2017. The Regional Working Committees are the implementation organizations promoting activities in their respective districts.
At the first meeting of the Central Promotion Committee, the participants looked back on the achievements and issues of the fiscal 2016 project. After that, they carried out an intensive study and discussion about the annual plans and activity proposals based on the basic policy adopted in the fiscal 2016 National Workshop held on January 21, 2017. Finally, they agreed to specific initiatives toward development of the project in fiscal 2017. Specifically, in Oudomxay, it is planned to develop local banana farms in an more organized structure in fiscal 2017.
