Industrial Relations and Labour Policy Seminar in Nepal

JILAF held a two-day seminar on industrial relations and labour policy in Kathmandu, Nepal, on December 13–14 for the three organizations affiliated with the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), namely, the Nepal Trade Union Congress (NTUC), the General Federation of Nepalese Trade Unions (GEFONT), and the All Nepal Trade Union Federation (ANTUF). Fifty-seven people attended, and 11 media organizations covered the seminar’s first day, including the Kantipur National Daily, News 24, and Mountain TV.

JILAF, together with the Confederation of Trade Unions of Myanmar (CTUM), held a two-day industrial relations and labour policy seminar in Yangon, Myanmar, on November 26–27 with the participation of 89 people (of whom 59 were women), including government officials and representatives of employers.

JILAF and the Bureau for Workers’ Activities (ACTRAV) of the International Labour Organization (ILO) jointly held a multinational seminar in the Thai capital of Bangkok for five days from August 22 to 26 on the main theme of “Globalization, Economic Integration, and the Role of Trade Unions: Toward Employment Stability, the Prevention of Meaningless Industrial Disputes, Etc. through the Building of Constructive Industrial Relations.”

Implementation of the SGRA Project by the JILAF Thailand Office (July)

On July 3 the JILAF Thailand Office held a Life Support Seminar (LSS) in the northeastern province of Samut Sakhon in Thailand for 28 informal-sector workers (migrant workers, etc.) facing especially difficult conditions with the aim of promoting future community development of the SGRA project (Supporting Grass-Roots Activities through the International Employers’ and Workers’ Network).

On the occasion of the fiscal 2016 start of the SGRA project (Supporting Grass-Roots Activities through the International Employers’ and Workers’ Network), which JILAF is implementing with grants from the Japanese government (Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare), a JILAF delegation attended the first meeting in the current fiscal year of the Central Roundtable, which comprises representatives from the central government, labour, and management in Bangladesh, as well as the International Labour Organization (ILO) and JILAF, to discuss plans and specific activities in the coming year based on fiscal 2016 project policy.

A JILAF delegation visited the Bangladeshi capital of Dhaka from April 16 (Saturday) to 20 (Wednesday) for the purpose of coordination toward the full-fledged start in fiscal 2016 of the SGRA project (Supporting Grass-Roots Activities through the International Employers’ and Workers’ Network), which JILAF is implementing with grants from the Japanese government (Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare). The delegation’s schedule included an unofficial meeting of the Central Working Group and consultations with local people involved in the project.

NTUC/JILAF Informal School Management Meeting and Teacher Training Held in Nepal

On Wednesday, April 6 the Nepal Trade Union Congress (NTUC) and JILAF held a school management meeting in Kathmandu for the nine informal schools that they operate in Nepal. A total of 43 teachers and school administrators attended.

SGRA Project in Nepal

The SGRA project (Supporting Grass-Roots Activities through the International Employers’ and Workers’ Network) in Nepal, which has been implemented with grants from the Japanese government (Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare) since fiscal 2011, has entered its sixth year. On the occasion of the project’s start in fiscal 2016, JILAF dispatched a delegation to Kathmandu from April 4 (Monday) to 10 (Sunday) to hold discussions and coordinate with local people involved in the project.
