Results of the National Tax Agency’s Survey on Private-Sector Wages in 2023
Average Annual Wage for Employees at 4.60 Million yen, 0.4% Up
According to the results of a survey of private-sector wages released by the National Tax Agency in September, the number of private-sector wage earners employed throughout the entirety of 2023 was 60.68 million, up 1.7% over the previous year.
The number of employees who worked throughout the year was 50.76 million, unchanged from the previous year. By gender, there were 28.87 million men, down 1.3%, and 21.89 million women, up 1.8%. The total number of regular wage earners was 33.54 million, down 1.1% from the previous year. The total number of non-regular wage earners was 12.98 million, up 4.4%.
The average annual wage for employees who worked throughout the year was 4.60 million yen, 0.4% up over the previous year, which marks the third consecutive year of growth. When broken down by gender, the average wage for men was 5.69 million yen, up 0.9%, and for women, 3.16 million yen, up 0.7%.
By regular and non-regular status, the average annual wage was 5.30 million yen for regular workers (full-time workers), up 1.3% over the previous year, and 2.02 million yen for non-regular workers, up 0.7%.
The breakdown of average annual wages consisted of an average salary and various allowances, which were 3.88 million yen, up 0.5% over the previous year, and the average bonus was 710,000 yen, down 0.3% from the previous year. When looking at this data by gender, the average salary and allowances for men were 4.76 million yen, up 1.0%, and for women, 2.72 million yen, up 0.9%. The average bonus for men was 920,000 yen, up 0.8%, and for women, 440,000 yen, down 0.7%.
Among the 50.76 million salaried workers who were employed throughout the year, 43.82 million people paid income tax through withholding, accounting for 86.3%, an increase of 0.5 points from the previous year. Additionally, the total tax amount was 11.7742 trillion yen, representing 5.41% of the total salary income of taxpayers, an increase of 0.01 points from the previous year.
